Fire Safety Engineering
Call on Coeus Technical Ltd for all aspects of fire safety engineering. Whether you require assistance with designing fire safety measures for a new development, or you need a retrospective fire strategy, we serve clients throughout the South of England.
What Is Fire Engineering?
The Institution of Fire Engineers defines fire engineering as:
"the application of scientific and engineering principles, rules [Codes], and expert judgement, based on an understanding of the phenomena and effects of fire and of the reaction and behaviour of people to fire, to protect people, property and the environment from the destructive effects of fire."
More useful information and guidence can be found at the Fire Safety Advice Centre.
The Fire Industry Association guide 'Scope of Works for the Fire Engineer' provides a best practice giude on the role of fire engineering at all stages of a project.
RIBA Plan of Work Stages
The RIBA Plan of Work organises the process of briefing, designing, constructing, and operating building projects into eight stages and explains the outcomes, core tasks, and information exchanges required at each stage.
Our fire engineers are generally involved in work from RIBA Stages 2 through 6 but can also be involved at Stage 1 if necessary. At Coeus Technical Ltd, we also help in Stage 7, when the building is occupied.

Design Fire Strategies
The best way to ensure fire safety is to engage a qualified engineer to create fire strategy documents at the earliest RIBA stages. Tailored to a building or development, a fire strategy will assess and detail all aspects of design to ensure they comply with all requirements before construction goes ahead.
Retrospective Fire Strategies
Our engineers also provide retrospective fire strategy documents for buildings that are already in operation. Essential for conducting a fire risk assessment, this strategy will help you to manage, plan, and coordinate appropriate fire safety procedures in your building.
Fire Safety Design Notes
Our engineers are also happy to assess whether your proposed designs meet fire safety requirements. Design notes can be useful in identifying areas of improvement for building designs at early stages. Incorporating this advice into plans can help you avoid costly design changes in later RIBA stages.
Fire Statements
From 1st August 2021, high-rise residential buildings in England are required to have fire statements. These statements comprise the following:
- Fire Safety in the Development
- Site Layout and Land Use
- Water Supplies for Fire and Rescue Appliance
- Any Prior Consultations
- Relevant Local Requirements
Using our extensive Fire Safety and Construction experience, we can help in this early stage of a project by creating a comprehensive fire statement in compliance with the guidance issued by the Secretary of State.
